A Study of Operations Management Practices and Non-Financial Performance at Mubuku III Hydro Power Plant in Kasese District

Abstract

Purpose: This study examined the relationship between operations management practices and non-financial performance of Mubuku III Hydropower Plant in Uganda. Specifically, the study examined: (i) the relationship between maintenance management practices and non-financial performance and, (ii) the relationship between quality control practices and non-financial performance.

Methodology: A case study research design with a sample size of 48 participants comprising of employees of Mubuku III Hydropower Plant was used and determined using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table. Simple random and purposive sampling methods were used to select the respondents and data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The quantitative data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics while qualitative data was analysed using thematic, content and narrative analysis.

Findings : The study findings revealed that maintenance management practices had a weak and statistically non-significant positive relationship with non-financial performance (r = 0.234, p = 0.110). In contrast, quality control practices exhibited a moderate and statistically significant positive relationship with non-financial performance (r = 0.342, p = 0.017). The study concludes that maintenance management practices at Mubuku III Hydropower Plant do not have a significant direct effect on non-financial performance unless supported by other factors. In contrast, quality control practices have a moderate and direct positive influence on non-financial performance of Mubuku III Hydropower Plant.

Recommendations: The study recommends enhancement of maintenance planning, effective use of advanced monitoring and predictive maintenance technologies such as real-time sensors, automated diagnostic systems, and data analytics in improving operations reliability and reducing downtime and strengthening maintenance capacity through targeted training and staff empowerment. It also recommends sustaining strict adherence to standard operating procedures and reinforcing continuous quality monitoring systems. Future research should extend to multiple hydropower plants, examine advanced maintenance technologies, and assess the influence of external regulatory and environmental factors on non-financial performance.
